On 26th September, Deepa Singhania from the department of Computer science gave a prelimary talk on the use of pointers to functions in C and C++.
Pointers to functions, as the name suggests, are pointers which point to functions. Using them we can model Event Driven Programming, Stack Smashing, even a basic implementation of Classes in C.
Tezpur University Computer Society(TUCS), established in 1997, in Tezpur University, Assam strives to create awareness about computers, information technology and its applications among university members though activities, lectures, demonstrations and presentations.

Beginner's Guide to MATLAB
On 19th September, Assistant Professor of Department of of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mr NM Kakoty, gave an introductory talk on using Matlab, a software package used in Computation and Algorithm development.
The highlight of the talk was the fact that Mr Kakoty demonstrated a use of MATLAB in the domains of Mechanical Engineering Simulation, Digital Signal Processing, Image Processeing and also Robotics.

Sunday Talk on Adobe After Effects
Today a talk on "Adobe After Effects" was given by Divyarup Basumatari, a student of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The topic was presented along with practical demonstrations. Initially, the plan was to demonstrate using an existing video which was created by Divyarup for TechXetra(a technical fest of the university) and by showing how he did it. But later on, he thought of demonstrating by creating a new composition and making the audience aware of all the facilities available in Adobe After Effects. Many of the students of the university attended the talk and they loved it.

DNS and Network Analysis
On 5th September, a talk was given by Saurabh K Karn (department of Mech. Engg.) on preliminary concepts of how DNs works as well has tracing network activity with Network Analysis tools such as Wireshark.
This talk was particularly interesting given the fact that we often (and mistakenly) use insecure methods to access sensitive resources on our networks, such as Wi-fi without encryption, and the use of telnet to access Unix terminals.
The talk helped spread awareness of how current are not designed with security as a primary concern.
Thanks Saurabh!

Processing with Processing!
Hello everyone,
Before I launch into my topic for this post, A bit about TUCS.
The Tezpur University Computer Society was established in 1997. The goal of the society was (and remains) making computers more palatable to the members of our university and beyond. Thus, this involved organizing computer-themed activities such as special quizzing, programming contents and CompuBlast, a computer-themed university festival.
Now, in 2008, a general technical festival of Tezpur University, techXetra was instituted. Departmental technical fests, such as CompuBlast ceased.
However, 2009 onwards TUCS is involved in conducting technical lectures every Sunday to university students. Students, faculty and research scholars, not just from the Department of Computer Science, but also from other departments are involved in this.
Our activities will recommence in the Semester, which is August 2010
I wanted to write this post about a very interesting project that grew out of MIT's media lab. Its called Processing . Processing is a java-based programming environment used for graphics programming. Its very easy and fun too.
Extensions to Processing have made it possible to include sound, video, computer vision and even robotics in the programs(called sketches). Processing is especially useful in teaching Graphics programming to beginners.
I hope you will check it out.

Sunday Talk on Adobe Photoshop and Natural Language Processing
On Sunday, the 21st of Feb 2010,TUCS had a Sunday Talk where topics like Adobe Photoshop and Natural Language Processing were presented by the students of the university. Normally in Sunday Talk two topics are presented. In the talk, practical demonstrations are given along with slide presentation. Topics like Wireless Sensor Networks,Designing a good GUI, JOOMLA, PROCESSING(which is a software) and as such were presented a few weeks back.
Sunday Talk
Under the banner of TUCS (Tezpur University Computer Society), every sunday a session is arranged where students, faculty, research scholars etc..present their presentations on different topics(IT related). The topics may be regarding some software or some programming language or any stuff of such type. The main aim of this talk is the exchange of ideas and knowledge. For a single person to have knowledge about every small/big thing is a big deal. So, the society and its members have found out this way of exchange of ideas and knowledge so as to reduce the effort of a person in gathering knowledge about such small/big things. The society feels that this talk will be an efficient measure to do the same. So far,TUCS has received a good response from the students of different departments of the university. TUCS wishes that this goes on and in the years to come, it can make this session a big one.
